This is not original nor is it innovative, but just like Nordjevel has taken the Norwegian second-wave black metal template and added more technicality, speed, and production value, Hyperion has improved upon Dissection’s melodic black metal formula in virtually every way. There is plenty of better black (and death) metal coming out of Sweden these days, but Seraphical Euphony is very impressive, goddamned beautiful, and an absolutely invigorating tour de force, worthy of your time and respect. Whenever M and Darkside get together and make music, magic happens. It has to be heard not described, but this masterful concoction of apocalyptic, misanthropic, tribal black metal is some of the best metal ever created. It seems tribal black metal is in fact a thing now, at least in my mind. Apocalypticists is nothing less than essential to every serious collection. Matt Dean
